Material estimation is elementary geometry, which is why it is so often done badly: it looks too simple to check. The errors do not come from the arithmetic but from what surrounds it — the coverage figures printed for ideal conditions, the offcuts a diagonal layout produces, the openings people forget to subtract and the ones they should not have subtracted.
Start with an accurate area
Measure each wall or floor section separately rather than treating the room as one rectangle — few rooms are truly square, and a 3 cm difference along a 5 m wall is a tile that will not fit at the end. Measure twice at different heights, and use the larger figure.
For paint, subtract only openings larger than about 1 m². Smaller windows and doors are absorbed by the waste allowance, and subtracting them tends to leave you short. For flooring, subtract nothing under 1 m² either, for the same reason.
Paint
Two coats are the realistic default. One coat only works when repainting the same colour over a sound surface; going from a dark colour to a light one, or painting new plaster, regularly needs three. New plasterboard and bare masonry also absorb a primer coat, which is a separate product with its own coverage.
Texture matters more than people expect: a rough render can consume 30 to 40 per cent more paint than smooth plaster for the same measured area, because the real surface is larger than its projection.

Take the area to be covered, add a waste allowance, then divide by the coverage per box — and always buy in whole boxes from the same production batch, because colour varies between batches noticeably enough to see on a finished floor.

Add one extra box beyond the calculation for future repairs. Ten years later the model will be discontinued, and a single cracked tile with no match means relaying a whole area.

Volume is length × width × thickness, in consistent units. The frequent mistake is thickness: a slab specified at 10 cm is 0.10 m, and entering 10 gives a volume a hundred times too large. Always convert to metres before multiplying.
For a 4 × 5 m slab at 10 cm: 4 × 5 × 0.10 = 2 m³. Add 5 to 10 per cent for the ground absorbing the mix, for uneven subgrade and for spillage. Concrete cannot be topped up an hour later — a pour that runs short leaves a cold joint, which is a structural weakness, not a cosmetic one.
A common by-volume mix for non-structural work is 1 : 2 : 3 — one part cement, two parts sand, three parts coarse aggregate — which needs roughly 7 bags of 50 kg cement per cubic metre. Structural elements should follow the mix specified by the engineer for the required strength class, not a rule of thumb.

Work out how many units fit into a square metre, including the mortar joint, then multiply by the wall area. A standard 19 × 19 × 39 cm block laid with a 1 cm joint occupies 0.20 × 0.40 m, so 12.5 blocks cover a square metre. A 9 × 19 × 19 cm brick laid flat gives about 25 per square metre.
Add 5 per cent for breakage and cuts, more if the wall has many openings. Subtract door and window areas here — unlike with paint, these are large enough to matter and the mortar volume scales with them.

- Mixing units. Convert everything to metres before any multiplication, and write the unit next to every number.
- Using generic coverage figures instead of the ones printed on the product.
- Forgetting the second coat, or the primer on new surfaces.
- Skipping the waste allowance because the room looks simple. Cuts happen at every edge.
- Buying tiles from different batches, which shows as a visible colour shift under raking light.
These estimates are for planning and budgeting. Anything structural — slabs, beams, foundations, load-bearing walls — must be specified by a qualified engineer, who is calculating loads rather than volumes.
