First add up the area of all four walls and the ceiling, then divide by the coverage of your sheet size — 32 sq ft for a 4×8 sheet or 48 sq ft for a 4×12 sheet. A 12×12 room with 8 ft ceilings has 384 sq ft of wall plus 144 sq ft of ceiling, so around 528 sq ft total before waste. With a typical 10% waste factor, that works out to roughly 19 sheets of 4×8 drywall.

How much waste should I add when calculating drywall?

A waste factor of about 10% is a common starting point for simple rectangular rooms. Rooms with many corners, angles, windows, or sloped ceilings generate more offcuts, so 15% or more may be safer. The calculator multiplies your area by (1 + waste%/100) before dividing by sheet size, so you can adjust the percentage to match your room's complexity.

Should I use 4x8 or 4x12 drywall sheets?

A 4×12 sheet covers 48 sq ft versus 32 sq ft for a 4×8, so larger sheets mean fewer seams to tape and finish. However, 4×12 sheets are heavier and harder to maneuver through doorways and stairwells, which matters if you are working alone. How many screws and how much joint compound do I need for drywall?

Do I subtract doors and windows when estimating drywall?
