How it works
Board count (before waste) = ⌈deck_length ÷ (board_width + gap)⌉. Total boards = ⌈board_count_raw × (1 + waste% ÷ 100)⌉. Linear feet = total_boards × deck_width. For joists: joist_count = ⌊deck_width ÷ joist_spacing⌋ + 1; total joist linear feet = joist_count × deck_length.

How do I calculate how many deck boards I need?
Divide the deck length by the board width plus the gap between boards, then round up. Apply your waste allowance to that count to get the total boards to buy, and multiply the total by the deck width to find the linear feet of lumber required.
How much waste should I add when buying decking?
A waste allowance of around 5–10% is typical for straight layouts, covering cuts, defects, and mistakes. Diagonal or picture-frame patterns generate more offcuts, so plan for a higher percentage in those cases.
What gap should I leave between deck boards?
A small gap — commonly about 1/8 to 1/4 inch (3 to 6 mm) — allows water drainage and lets the boards expand and contract with humidity. Composite and PVC manufacturers publish their own required gaps, so always check the product's installation guide.
How many joists does a deck need?
Divide the deck width by the joist spacing, round down, and add one for the final joist: joist_count = ⌊deck_width ÷ spacing⌋ + 1. A spacing of 16 inches (about 40 cm) on center is the common default, and multiplying the count by the deck length gives the total linear feet of joist lumber.
