Steps to Calories Calculator

Walking is one of the most effective forms of low-impact exercise, and counting steps is a popular way to track daily physical activity. This calculator converts your step count into calories burned using a weight-scaled formula: approximately 0.04 kcal per step per kilogram of body weight, which closely matches MET-based energy expenditure research for average walking pace.

The calculator also estimates the distance you have covered based on your stride length. If you enter your height, stride length is estimated at 41.5% of your height in centimeters — a widely used biomechanical approximation. Otherwise, a standard default of 76 cm per stride is applied. Results are shown in both kilometers and miles for international convenience.

How it works

Calories = steps × weight (kg) × 0.00004. Stride (cm) = height (cm) × 0.415 (or 76 cm default). Distance (km) = (steps × stride cm) ÷ 100,000. Distance (mi) = distance (km) × 0.621371.

Use cases

  • Estimating daily calorie burn from a pedometer or fitness tracker
  • Planning walking workouts to reach a specific calorie deficit
  • Converting step goals into meaningful distance milestones
  • Comparing energy expenditure across different body weights
  • Tracking progress towards daily activity recommendations (10,000 steps)

Frequently asked questions

How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?

It depends mostly on body weight. Using this calculator's formula of about 0.04 kcal per step per kilogram, a 70 kg person burns roughly 280 calories over 10,000 steps, while a 90 kg person burns around 360. Walking speed and terrain also affect the real figure.

How are calories burned from steps calculated?

The calculator multiplies your step count by your body weight in kilograms and by 0.00004 (about 0.04 kcal per step per kg). This weight-scaled approach closely matches MET-based energy expenditure research for an average walking pace, so heavier people burn more calories for the same number of steps.

How many steps are in a mile or a kilometer?

With an average stride, roughly 1,250 to 1,550 steps make up one kilometer and about 2,000 to 2,500 steps make up one mile, depending on your height and pace. This calculator estimates your stride at 41.5% of your height, or defaults to 76 cm, to convert steps into distance.

How is walking distance estimated from steps?

Distance equals steps multiplied by stride length, then converted to kilometers. If you enter your height, stride is estimated as height in centimeters times 0.415; otherwise a 76 cm default is used. The result is shown in both kilometers and miles, where 1 km equals 0.621371 miles.

Are steps-to-calories estimates accurate?

They are reasonable approximations rather than exact measurements. The formula does not account for walking speed, incline, fitness level, or individual metabolism, all of which affect real energy use. Treat the number as a useful guide for tracking trends, not a precise calorie count.
