Running Pace Calculator — Pace, Finish Time and Splits

This pace calculator solves any of the three running variables when you know the other two: pace (time per kilometer or mile), total time, and distance. Enter your goal time for a 5K, 10K, half marathon, or marathon and get the pace you need to hold; or enter your usual pace and a distance to predict your finish time. Preset race distances and a splits table show the expected time at each kilometer or mile marker.

Pace is the language of running: training plans prescribe it, GPS watches display it, and race strategies are built around it. Unlike speed (km/h), pace expresses minutes per unit of distance, which maps directly to what you see at each course marker. The calculator also converts between min/km and min/mi and shows the equivalent speed, useful for treadmill settings.

How it works

Pace = total time ÷ distance; Time = pace × distance; Distance = total time ÷ pace. Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km). Conversion: pace (min/mi) = pace (min/km) × 1.60934. Example: 50 min over 10 km = 5:00 min/km = 12 km/h.

Use cases

  • Finding the pace required to hit a goal time in a 5K, 10K, half, or marathon
  • Predicting your finish time from your average training pace
  • Generating a splits table to follow during the race at each marker
  • Converting pace between min/km and min/mi for international plans
  • Setting the right treadmill speed to match a target outdoor pace
  • Planning negative splits by comparing paces for each race segment

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your total time by the distance covered. If you ran 10 km in 55 minutes, your pace is 55 ÷ 10 = 5.5 min/km, which reads as 5:30 per kilometer — remember to convert the decimal part to seconds (0.5 min = 30 s). The calculator handles this conversion automatically and also shows the equivalent speed in km/h or mph.

What pace do I need to run a marathon in 4 hours?

A 4-hour marathon (42.195 km) requires an average pace of about 5:41 min/km, or roughly 9:09 min/mi. In practice, runners aim slightly faster — around 5:35–5:40 min/km — to build a small buffer for water stops and late-race fatigue. The splits table shows the target elapsed time at each kilometer so you can check yourself throughout the race.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace measures time per distance (minutes per kilometer or mile), while speed measures distance per time (km/h or mph). They are inverses: speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km). A 5:00 min/km pace equals 12 km/h. Runners prefer pace because it matches the course markers, while treadmills usually ask for speed — the calculator shows both.

How do I convert pace from min/km to min/mi?

Multiply the pace in min/km by 1.60934, since a mile is 1.60934 km. A 5:00 min/km pace equals about 8:03 min/mi. Going the other way, divide by 1.60934. Be careful with the seconds: convert the pace to decimal minutes first, multiply, then convert back — or simply let the calculator do the conversion.

What is a splits table and how do I use it in a race?

A splits table lists the elapsed time you should see at each kilometer or mile marker to stay on goal pace. For a 25-minute 5K, the even splits are 5:00, 10:00, 15:00, 20:00, and 25:00. Comparing your watch to the table during the race tells you instantly if you are ahead of or behind target, allowing small corrections instead of a desperate final sprint.
