How it works
Required Final Score = (Desired Grade − (1 − Final Weight) × Current Grade) ÷ Final Weight. All values are expressed as percentages (0–100). Rearranged from the weighted average formula: Final Grade = (1 − w) × Current + w × Final, where w = Final Exam Weight / 100.

What grade do I need on my final to pass?
Enter your current grade, the final exam's weight, and the passing grade you need, and the calculator applies the formula Required = (Desired − (1 − w) × Current) ÷ w, where w is the exam weight as a decimal. For example, with a 70% current grade, a 40% exam weight, and a 60% target, you would need a 45% on the final.
How does the final exam weight affect the score I need?
The heavier the final exam weighs, the more it can move your overall grade in either direction. With a high weight, a lower current grade can still be rescued by a strong final; with a low weight, your grade is mostly locked in and the final can only shift it slightly.
What does it mean if the required score is over 100%?
A required score above 100% means your target grade is mathematically impossible given your current grade and the exam's weight. In that case, consider adjusting your target, asking about extra credit, or focusing your effort on other courses where the outcome is still open.
What if the calculator says I need 0% or a negative score?
A required score at or below 0% means you have already secured your desired grade before taking the final. Any score on the exam will keep you at or above your target, though you should still show up if the exam is mandatory for course completion.
Can I use this calculator with letter grades or a 0-10 scale?
Yes, as long as you convert everything to percentages first. On a 0-10 scale simply multiply grades by 10 (a 7.5 becomes 75%), and for letter grades use your institution's percentage equivalents before entering the values.
